How Hard Do People Really Work From Home (WFH)?

Apparently very hard! Anecdotally in conversations with our staff, we start earlier, work later, and have fewer “office” distractions. Empirically, a two-year study conducted by Stanford University Professor Nicholas Bloom reinforces our experience.

When Professor Bloom started the study, he expected the positives and negatives of WFH to balance themselves out. He was wrong. Employees who WFH, were more productive, took shorter breaks, had fewer sick days and took less time off.

The WFH option was NOT for everyone. At the end of the study, more than half the people opted to come back to the office. They felt isolated from others and needed time together.

You can read about the study and watch the TedTalk here.

*Note: This study was conducted a few years ago. These days with the availability of Unified Communications and Collaboration solutions, the feeling of isolation is significantly reduced. There are a variety of vehicles that allow for Video Conferencing, Instant Messaging, Group Chats, and Collaboration.
